What We have learnt about the Brain

For a long time the common wisdom was that after childhood the brain changed only when it started to decline. Over the past decencies scientific research programs have measured and documented the plasticity of the brain, its ability to heal, to re-organise itself, to improve, to change. These studies have demonstrated that we can transform our minds, rewire our brains, free ourselves from reactions, thoughts and subconscious beliefs that are creating suffering and often disease and change our vision of ageing.

Keep your brain sharp and healthy
Neuroscience has taught us that the brain is amazing and is far more resilient and adaptable that we thought. Practices like meditation can even develop parts of the brain and qualities, which are dormant in all of us and can help us to be happier and healthier. Our brain is the control centre of the body. It controls speech, movement, thoughts, memory and regulates the function of many organs.

There are many things we can do to stay sharp, keep our memory intact, improve our attention and our mood, and even develop our brain ‘s capacities. Here are some of them.

1/Keep learning!

Find something you wish to study and go for it. If you don’t use it you loose it! Learning a language is a fabulous way to work out your brain and memory.

2/Commit to reduce stress and find a method to practice. I teach Reiki, Shamanism, meditation, visualisation, mudras and other techniques to my clients and they work! Stress is one of the main cause of disease and unhappiness. You don’t need to keep it.

3/Be creative!

With every new experience the connections of your neural network are rewiring themselves. Awaken the artist, the writer in you. Discover activities that are stimulating your creativity. Creativity is an inherent part of us and the world around us that brings joy and enhances our life and health. It is a unique way to express our emotions, interact with the world in a more dynamic way, reconnect with the child within, communicate easily, deliver our message to the world and so much more!

4/Check what you eat!

Healthy brain food includes fruits and vegetables (broccoli, avocado) vitamins B, vitamin D (sun exposure early morning or after 4pm) , Omega 3 and 6 (wild caught fish is good if you are not vegan), Olive oil , Coconut oil, turmeric, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, flax seed, walnuts…

Top Brain Food: Blueberries often called brain berries protect from oxidative stress and may reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia & other berries, red grapes, broccoli, avocado, carrots, garlic, spinach, green tea, tomatoes, nuts and seeds and raw cacao.

5/Do a heavy metal detox

Most people have some levels of heavy metal poisoning caused by the accumulation of certain metals in the body due to exposure through food, water, industrial chemicals, or other sources. While our bodies need small amounts of some heavy metals — such as zinc, copper, chromium, iron, and manganese — toxic amounts are harmful.

7/Essential oils are your brain’s friends!

Our nose is the gateway of our brain! When essential oils are inhaled, the aromas are first processed in the olfactory bulb, which is connected to the limbic system where memory and emotions are stored.

Essential oils high in sesquiterpenes, such as Vetiver, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Myrrh are known to cross the the blood-brain barrier. Single oils like Frankincense (a general cerebral stimulant) as well as Peppermint, Rosemary, Lemongrass, Basil, Tangerine can help support memory and concentration.

Young Living, the essential oil world leader for many years, has created some amazing blends that promotes deep concentration and channel physical energy into mental energy: Brain Power™, Clarity™, En-R-Gee™, Valor™

8/Exercise!

Good for your body, your mood and your brain! ‘Physical activity sparks biological changes that encourage brain cells to bind to one another.” Professor John Ratey says that this sparks increases the brain’s ability to learn, adapt, and perform other cognitive tasks.

9/Be social!

Cherish your friends and get involved in social activities. Studies show that people who have recently lost their partners have more chance to suffer from heart conditions. The increased likelihood for a recently widowed person to die, often called the “widowhood effect”, is one of the best documented examples of the effect of social relations on health.

Social relationships are fundamental to emotional fulfilment and cognitive function and close, loving relationships crucial to our well-being and happiness. Do you suffer from isolation? Join a group, be involved in your community, and if you need support, don’t wait, seek help. If you never had a Reiki treatment, it might be a good idea to try!
