What is Sea Moss?

Sea moss, also known as Irish sea moss or red seaweed, is a spiny sea vegetable primarily harvested for health supplements and as a thickening ingredient in commercial foods. It grows in several colours, such as shades of green, yellow, purple, red, brown, and black. It’s an edible sea plant similar to other seaweeds, algae, and other familiar leafy sea vegetables like kelp or dulse.

Discover Sea Moss benefits

Like other sea vegetables, sea moss is also a naturally good source of iodine, a micronutrient necessary for thyroid health. We know that many people are deficient in iodine. Iodine is a type of mineral that’s naturally found in the earth’s soil and ocean waters. We need to get enough iodine in our diet as it regulates hormones, foetal development, and more.

I’ve heard about Sea Moss for many years but never introduced it for a long time in my nutrition at it was not easy to find reliable source and to prepare it. Recently Sea Moss came back to the forefront through a company called Belo.

What are the Health Benefits?

1. Natural Energy Booster

Rich in B vitamins, sea moss aids in converting food into energy, enhancing metabolism, and reducing fatigue. Its iron content further combats tiredness by supporting healthy red blood cell production.

2. Thyroid Support

Iodine and tyrosine in sea moss are crucial for thyroid hormone production, regulating metabolism, growth, and development. Adequate intake supports thyroid health and prevents related disorders. Without iodine, thyroid hormone production can decrease. A “low” or under active thyroid gland can lead to a condition called hypothyroidism.

3. Gut Health

High in dietary fiber and prebiotics, sea moss nourishes beneficial gut bacteria, promoting digestion and a balanced microbiome. Magnesium aids in relaxing digestive tract muscles, easing gastrointestinal discomfort.

4. Skin Health

Amino acids like citrulline and arginine in sea moss support collagen production, maintaining skin elasticity and hydration. Its anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce skin issues such as acne and hyperpigmentation.

5. Immune Support

Packed with antioxidants, vitamins A, C, E, and minerals like zinc and selenium, sea moss bolsters the immune system, enhancing the body’s natural defenses against infections.
