Why Iron Matters – The Hidden Drain On Our Energy
Iron is what your body uses to make haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen to your cells. When iron runs low, your body struggles to deliver energy, resulting in anaemia—literally meaning “without oxygen.” This can leave you feeling tired, dizzy, weak, or moody, and prone to headaches and pale skin.
But here is the catch: you might experience these exact symptoms
even if your standard iron blood test looks “normal.” That is often due to a ferritin deficiency. Ferritin is your body’s iron storage tank. When your reserves run empty, it can quietly open the door to deeper health concerns over time, from thyroid imbalances to metabolic issues.
Did you know 25% of the world’s population doesn’t have enough iron? It is one of the most common deficiencies.
If you’ve been feeling run down despite doing “all the right things,” your body might just be asking for deeper replenishment.
Finding the Cause of Iron or Ferritin Deficiency
While you doctor might prescribe a blood test and help you find the cause outside low iron levels, studies demonstrated that two factors could lower ferritin levels: low thyroid function and low vitamin C consumption. Iron deficiency mainly affects menstruating and pregnant women and vegetarians.
Note that too much iron can be more harmful than too little and it’s important to check your level before supplementing.
Plant Based Food Rich in Iron
Here is a list of plant-based foods providing iron, for better absorption it’s advised to consume food rich in vitamin C (citrus fruits, papaya, broccoli, strawberries, kiwi) at the same time. Iron from plants is more difficult to absorb than animals source iron (Oysters, beef, veal, canned sardines, turkey, chicken, fish (salmon, tuna, haddock)
- Spinach (cooked—when raw, iron is blocked by oxalates)
- Pumpkin and sunflower seeds
- Firm tofu
- Beans and lentils
- Baked potato with skin (without skin, a potato’s iron is minimal)
- Blackstrap molasses
- Prune juice
- Dried fruit (raisins, apricots, etc.)
- Nuts (cashews, almonds, pistachio, etc.)
