Your Health: Can Reiki Help Lower High Blood Pressure?
Medical experts describe high blood pressure as a ‘silent killer’ because it rarely shows symptoms until dangerous levels are reached. Warning signs include headaches, nosebleeds, and shortness of breath. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications like heart attacks, strokes, aneurysms, heart failure, and damage to the memory, eyes, and kidneys.
Management typically involves medications—such as diuretics and beta-blockers—alongside lifestyle changes like reducing sodium, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and managing stress.
Stress and anxiety can raise blood pressure. Receiving Reiki treatments may help people to relax, thus potentially lowering their blood pressure indirectly.
Changes to the Autonomic Nervous System During Reiki
Researchers at South Glasgow University Hospital conducted a study. The study assessed Reiki treatments’ effect on the autonomic nervous systems of healthy participants. The study found that Reiki treatments decreased both heart rate and diastolic blood pressure significantly.
Biochemical and Physiological Changes Related to Reiki
Another study by researchers at the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center found a 30-minute Reiki treatment reduced anxiety. It also lowered systolic blood pressure. The study also found that Reiki treatment increased salivary IgA levels and skin temperature.
Effect of Reiki on Blood Hypertension
A third study completed in Brazil further solidifies the evidence that Reiki can lower blood pressure. In this study, 66 participants were divided into three groups. One group received Reiki treatment. Another group received a placebo, and the third acted as a control. Although all three groups experienced a drop in blood pressure, the effect was greatest among the people in the group that received Reiki treatments.
Based on the scientific evidence and the positive reports from people who have enjoyed receiving Reiki treatments, the potential of Reiki as a supportive treatment to benefit people with high blood pressure is promising.
